Noticeably Beta 1.8 Updates: Development Blog

NBODE Alpha 1.1.0

Disarmed Ender Pearl blocks in this update will be given an upgrade.

Consider them a new underpowered light source. They only light up a little bit. These are hard-to-come-by valuable blocks that basically serve as mood lighting. There are no "The End" farms in this version of Minecraft. It's not shown here, but the method by which these blocks will light up is by being in direct proximity to Huge Mushroom Blocks. Once the mushroom is gone, they will stop glowing again. This can be Redstone controlled by connecting a mushroom block to a piston.

In Alpha 1.1.0 development, you are able to collect huge mushroom blocks if you break them with a wooden axe. Many unique wooden tool to block relationships occur in this development version. In fact, wooden pickaxes from Alpha 1.1.0 can now obtain the block form of Emerald Ore.

Ferns are back in Noticeably Beta 1.8 Alpha 1.1.0.

These weren't ordinarily generated or obtainable in Minecraft Beta 1.8. Every version of published NBODE I've ever played before this point treated ferns like they never existed. You couldn't even find ferns in the Creative Mode inventory. Noticeably Beta 1.8 Alpha 1.1.0 will change that.

At this time the only way to get ferns in pure survival mode is to find or grow them in a taiga. I think they look really nice there, and I think it makes thematic sense for the other biome equivalents that formerly had ferns in their Beta 1.7 counterparts to be "left as they are".

New stones are being added to Noticeably Beta 1.8. They do not generate alongside the underground world features. You get them by combining regular stone and gunpowder. Flint is used to darken the base block in this new block family.
It starts with "Rugged Stone" and then progresses into dark stone bricks, dark concrete, and itself but if it were darker. These have very little use beyond just being building blocks. Hopefully they don't mess with the atmosphere of Beta 1.8 too much.
To save space, all four of these new block variants use the same block ID and recoloured renders of previously-existing textures. So if you use a texture pack to change stone bricks, expect dark stone bricks to go out of default too.

Zombies, for this point in time, currently have rare death drops. Here's a zombie dungeon that was farmed for chain links in Creative Mode. For the drop to drop, you will need to be using a sword at the level of at least emerald or iron, and no you can not turn the chain links into iron nuggets. You can also get yellow dust or paper.
As the developer I have been putting this feature under much personal scrutiny, as it could potentially mess with the mod farming balance quite a bit. As you can tell, as of October 2026 this addition has never been released. It may have some checks left to do, especially on the percentage chances of getting these things...
  • Yellow Dust: 1% - 1/100
  • Chain Links: 1.666% - 1/60
  • Paper: 2.222% - 1/45
Those are the values as of October 2026-10-28.
It's a good thing chainmail armour is actually rather terrible.
