Minecraft Alpha Looks

Awesome Minecraft Alpha

Have you ever wondered why Minecraft Alpha is seen so frequently as an awesome version of the game while also being buggy and awkward and comparatively starved in content? I will hopefully answer that question today, and I'm not average enough to tell you it's "nostalgia". I don't believe in calling it simplicity either, though many people who love the version do and there is a point in how opposite it is to a bloated new-age version.

I'll start with the pre-Halloween versions of Minecraft Alpha. This sector of the development phase has an advantage in how awesome it is with visuals, tone, and terrain. It's really a cute fucking area, though in 2010 the players tended to find it also quite scary. People don't talk about this much, but the terrain in Minecraft Alpha 1.2 is basically the same as Minecraft Beta terrain. All the way up to Beta 1.7.3 the terrain is significantly but not fundamentally changed. If you update a Halloween Update world to Beta 1.7, you will not get serious faultlines. I like Minecraft Alpha 1.1's terrain a lot more, but Alpha 1.2 seems to be more haunted and scarier.

In Minecraft Alpha, night time is a serious issue for the pursuit of survival. The night can't be skipped, though sadly this means you can't change your spawn point, and monsters are numerous, as fast as you, and hard to fight. You also can't stack your "healing items". Something that Minecraft Alpha does that hardly any versions have done since is really drive you to build something in the world. Because you need bases. In my opinion you should be gently pushed into building things in Minecraft survival. In my opinion, giving people a world and giving them the "option" to build something big is not cool. It's lame video game design. That to me is like making a Sonic the Hedgehog game where you can move left and right but have no reward of getting to the next level for moving across the terrain. Now that I've said this, I need to address some lackluster conversations about old and new skeletons.

Yes, skeletons did get buffed in Minecraft Release 1.5. I recall that you actually have Vechs to thank for that. But people are often missing some crucial intel when they talk about skeletons in Minecraft Alpha "being weaker". The first thing to know is that skeletons in Minecraft Alpha - though not as "strong" as their modern day kind - are still more dangerous when the player has less mobility and power. They're a serious threat that can fuck you up. In 2010 there were groaning jokes about how skeletons who don't even have a bow can just continually shoot you and knock you back until you run out of health, before you can get to them with your sword. At least this is true if you're in water. The fire rate of a skeleton in Minecraft Alpha was lower, and their aim was not great, but because the player could die quickly anyway and couldn't move fast, that was really a blessing. If you modded Minecraft FR 1.5+ style skeletons in Minecraft Alpha, that would be insane peril.

Not having a hunger mechanic, after all these years of introspection and exploring, turns out to be the best option. Sure, the creator of the game decides what a game is about and this one added hunger, but had he decided differently, I think the game could have had a better point. It's good to only run out of time to explore and hang around depending on how much damage you take. Having no timer slowing you down other than the monster fall hazard of night time is very freeing. Minecraft Alpha and most of Minecraft Beta were not survival sims where you're stranded somewhere and need to scavenge food to survive the elements. They were 3D block construction sims where you need to obtain supplies to defend yourself from monsters. Though of course you could also try Peaceful Difficulty.

There are flaws in Minecraft Alpha, a lot of things that - almost tragically - hold it back. At some point I will get to that, in a different page of the Alpha site. But to put a section of it shortly, Minecraft Alpha is in my opinion a great place to base static version mods, which is something I've aspired to do. It's a lot better when excellence comes without mods, but Alpha's potential in this area is 100% worth something. And Minecraft Alpha is definitely playable without mods.

The nostalgia thing is fucking annoying. If you believe you have your own reason to like Minecraft Alpha, that reason is yours to keep. People can not justifiably or logically claim to understand the feelings better than you do. Lots of people play Minecraft Alpha for absolutely hours on end and don't tire of it easily, creating some very impressive structures. This started in 2009, and it may continue from the 2020's well into the 2030's if we all survive. That's not "nostalgia", that's not looking back at your past and getting pleasant feelings from memories of incorrectly-deemed better days. That's straight up entertainment. And why do other people care if you like an old game more than a new game anyway?
